In light of the trans military ban, a lot of you have written things on social media along the lines of, "Trans people, I love and support you, you're not a burden, etc." That's nice, but it would be nicer if you told your fellow cis people that disrespecting trans people isn't behavior that you accept. Another thing you can do to show that your words aren't just words is to give a trans person money for necessary medical care that many trans people can't access (and accessing it will almost certainly become harder in the next year.)

Here's one opportunity to do just that. Rory is an acquaintance of mine and I can vouch for them being a legit person with a need.

FMK #18: Writers of Color

Last week's F win was a tie between The Dragon and the George and Goblin Quest. I am waffling over which one to pick. Goblin Quest had discussion in the comments, but on the other hand, reading it would break my unbroken streak of not having read any of the many Hines novels I own.

K winner was the Callahan. I am going to keep Callahan's Crosstime Saloon but this may be the nudge I needed to just drop the rest.

Anyway, this week's FMK theme is SF by Anglophone Writers of Color. We will pretend the reason it was tough to get a set of ten together for this is that when I get one of these it doesn't linger as long on the to-read pile. (Actually, it was tougher than I expected because finding out race for a lot of SF writers - especially older and more obscure ones - is not simple. There does not seem to be an easily accessible and accurate masterlist of SF Writers of Color out there. And at some point, for some of then, I found myself thinking that if they aren't interested in making their ancestry part of their public bio, I need to not be looking this hard. I never did figure out if Philip Jose Farmer is actually in any way Hispanic.)

How FMK works, short version: I am trying to clear out my unreads. So there is a poll, in which you get to pick F, M, or K. F means I should spend a night of wild passion with the book ASAP, and then decide whether to keep it or not. M means I should continue to commit to a long-term relationship of sharing my bedroom with it. K means it should go away immediately. Anyone can vote, you don't have to actually know anything about the books.

I pick a winner on Friday night (although won't actually close the poll, people can still vote,) and report results/ post the new poll on the following Tuesday, and write a response to the F winner sometime in the next week.

Link to long version of explanation (on first poll)

Poll: Butler, Delany, Hamilton, Hurston, Martinez, Mosley, Reynolds, Takei, White, Wilson )

Poll post coming soon! But first, I have finished Discount Armageddon by Seanan McGuire!

It was fun! I enjoyed it! The characters were great! Much like the other McGuire I have read, I felt like the more I thought about it, the less there there was there! (I can't think of a single piece of internal evidence other than Verity's word that it took place in Manhattan instead of, like, Columbus, Ohio. The Price-vs.-Covenant thing really doesn't work with the logistics that are set up in the book. Verity's main character note is that ballroom dance is the most important thing to her, she tells us this at least every fifth page, and yet at no point does she ballroom dance, even as practice. Etc.)

And I did really like the variety of cryptids and the cryptid community, but the "cryptozoologist" thing still bothers me, in that a cryptozoologist is a very specific thing situated in a very specific time and culture - it is not something like "witch" that has enough meanings with enough history you can basically go with whatever - and I would really really love to read an urban fantasy about cryptozoologists - and Verity Price is really really not one. (I mean, you could make a cool backstory about how the Prices and allies adopted the terminology ironically in the 60s to further distinguish themselves from the Covenant - or that Sanderson got himself in WAY over his head with a Price girl at some point and came out very confused, which is a fanfic I would definitely read - but she does not seem to be doing that.)

But! It is a urban fantasy in which ALL OF THE SEX IS UNAMBIGUOUSLY AND EXPLICITLY CONSENSUAL, and I didn't even know that was a thing that existed, so I will forgive it A LOT for being that. (I would also enjoy the fanfic about how Price family sex education includes a unit about how part of their mission is to introduce the urban fantasy community to the idea of "affirmative consent" which it had previously lacked entirely.)

I have Down Among The Sticks and Bones on its way from the library, but I have learned it is NOT about the Skeleton Girl (with that title how is it not about the Skeleton Girl?) so I find I am not that excited about it coming.

Greetings! This is Toriel!

I have been thinking, recently... and today, I became curious about other's opinions on the matter, as well.

How many of you are happy here?

Certainly, this place is far from ideal. We are of course, being kept here against our will, and I know that I personally, am not as bothered by that, as I have spent most of my life in a similar situation. Not to mention that, quite often, the events that it forces upon us are... well. Ordeals.

But for some, a place like this may be the only place we can see some people close to us. People we may have lost. For others, this is the only place we could truly exist at all. Wonderland, despite having entire worlds to pick from, does seem fond of picking people who know each other, people within close-knit groups within those worlds.

I have met people, made relationships, and enjoyed experiences that I could not have ever had, otherwise. Despite all its faults... I am glad to have been brought here.

Literally overnight, a dense and mature forest has sprung up in the struggilng crater-garden that used to be the Kirkwall Chantry. It's a beautiful sight to behold, and every herb and vegetable being cultivated there has abruptly flowered, born fruit, or ripened in abundance, whether or not it's actually in season. Better pick it now.

There's no explanation for this anywhere, no note, no witnesses nearby, though if one looks closely at the greenery in the very center, there are two faint patches of dried blood.

[A teenager with long, reddish hair and amber-colored eyes considers the camera, adjusting a few note-cards he made as he thought things through]

Hi, everyone. Wonderlanders or whatever you call yourselves, Obviously this is my first time doing this kind of thing. Hell, the last time I was talking to a camera, it was to record my own eulogy after I’d been shot.

In the knee, it wasn’t really that serious or anything. But that kind of thing does make you wonder. Maybe this is the place for that. Wondering.

[A small, awkward chuckle.]

I’m just hoping someone out there sees this, and can lend the poor noob a hand. Because, prison or nexus dimension or whatever, this place sure seems strange, even by my standards. And, um, yeah, I spent my childhood in a VR chamber because I wasn’t able to interact with the rest of the world very well.

Oh, oops, I forgot to introduce myself. My name is Bart. Bart Allen. It’s short for Bartholomew, and I wanted to be different. It’s not the worst nickname in the world. I have a friend who has to go by ‘Gates’ because his name’s pretty much impossible to pronounce without insectoid mandibles.

We've just received a gorgeous poster for Unseen Theatre's next Discworld production, from director Pamela Munt. Have a look down the page... but first, AUDITIONS!

Adelaide's famous Unseen Theatre will be casting for The Truth at the end of July:

"We here at Unseen are very excited about re-visiting one of our most popular plays that we last produced in 2003. This will be a whole new fresh take on Sir Terry Pratchett’s “THE TRUTH”. Auditions will be held on Sunday 30th July 2017 at 3pm at The Bakehouse Theatre, 255 Angas St. Adelaide.

Roles available for The Truth include...

Journalists
William de Worde (leading role – unwittingly invents the concept of investigative journalism)
Sacharissa (William’s offsider)
Gunilla Goodmountain (head of printing press – a dwarf)
Boddony (printing press worker – a dwarf)

Talking Dogs
Gaspode (talking dog) narrator and actor
Wuffles (non talking dog – belongs to Vetinari – main witness to the “crime”)

Palace
Lord Vetinari (Patrician of Ankh-Morpork – this role already pre cast)
Drumknott (Lord Vetinari’s secretary)

City Watch
Commander Vimes (head of the City Watch – a “born” Copper)
Nobby Nobbs (originally a street urchin – indistinguishable from a monkey – may be cut)
Angua (a werewolf)
Cheery Littlebottom (a forensic scientist dwarf)

Plotters (noblemen/women)
Slant (zombie lawyer) (this role pre-cast)
Lord de Worde, (William’s father)
Lord Rust
Lady Selachi
Lady Venturi

Criminals
Charlie (Vetinari doppelganger, therefore played by the same actor as Lord Vetinari)
Pen (intelligent but insane criminal – think Straw Dogs)
Tulip (Mr. Pin’s very dumb but with surprising intellectual aspirations, offsider)

Extras
Foul Ole Ron (insane and really bad smelling head of street tramps for whom Gaspode “talks”)
Mrs. Arcanum (classic boarding house tyrant)
Mrs.Mackleduff (Mrs. Arcanum’s offsider)
Wintler (purveyor of amusingly shaped vegetables)
Duckman and other tramps
Pin’s “shadows”
Thugs
Disorganiser (probably sound FX)

This round closes on 5 August @ 7PM EDT. (Countdown Timer.)

The girl went over the mountain

ilanarama: a mountain (mountain)
[personal profile] ilanarama
Yesterday I ran the Kendall Mountain Run in 3:17:45, making both my goals of a) under 3:30 and b) not falling. I felt a little guilty when I proudly announced my time on Facebook and a few people thought it was a marathon time (26.2 miles), since it's about five minutes under my marathon PR and a plausible result - at least if you didn't know that I haven't been training for a marathon, or that I've had a big slowdown in the past few years. So then I hastily added that it was for a 12-mile race, which immediately had people boggling in the opposite direction, considering my half marathon PR (13.1 miles) is less than half that time! But it becomes more understandable when you see the elevation profile:

The course runs up a freakin' MOUNTAIN. (And back down again.) I didn't take pictures, but for some historical background and video shots of runners on the course (all much faster than me) from previous years, the organizers have put a nifty video on Facebook.

Blathering about the run )

My final statistics were not actually that great. I came in 188th overall out of 236, 62/87 women, 5/6 in my 10-year age group (nearly an hour ahead of #6). Actually there were only four women older than me in the race - the F60-69 AG contained one 68-year-old - and all of them beat me! Oh, well. I have not been running nearly as much as I was back when I regularly ran this type of mountain race, so I'm not really surprised. I'm happy enough that I beat my nominal goal of 3:30, and most especially, that I didn't add any new scabs to those currently healing on my knees!

Now, my legs hurt like you wouldn't believe, though I don't think I actually injured anything, just overused the muscles of my quads and glutes. Hopefully everything will feel good by next Saturday, when we head out into the wilderness for a week of backpacking. Then it will be time to turn my exercise attention to mountain biking in preparation for the Telluride-to-Moab ride in September. But I'll still be running 3-4 days a week, including attending the club track workouts, and hopefully by the time October comes around, I'll be ready to run a decent half marathon, and maybe even sign up for a late fall/early winter marathon.
